What Is “Molly?”

Molly, which is sometimes also referred to as ecstasy or MDMA, is a synthetic party drug. This illegal substance, which was originally developed as a medication to treat depression, is known to have an impact on mood and perception. Molly is typically taken in the form of a tablet, powder, or capsule.

Why People Use MDMA

This substance is always referenced as a ‘party drug’ because it is typically used by teens or young adults at clubs or concerts. In fact, Molly and MDMA are commonly associated with electronic music. So why do people use this drug before or while they party?

People may use Molly to heighten their physical senses, achieve a greater sense of well-being, get more energy, or feel a sense of pleasure/happiness. Someone who takes Molly is more likely to show warmth toward others and express their emotions than if they were sober.

When someone takes Molly, their inhibitions are lowered. They will shed any embarrassment or hesitation they may have had before and enjoy the moment in time. If they are at an event such as a party or rave, they will be more likely to dance and feel the music than if they didn’t take Molly.

Side Effects of Taking Molly

Even though some individuals have pleasant experiences with Molly, some may feel some symptoms that could have a negative impact on the body and mind. Side effects of taking Molly may include:

  • Altered perception
  • Jaw clenching
  • Overheating & sweating
  • Hot flashes or chills
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • High blood pressure
  • Stiff muscles or joints
  • Feeling disconnected from your body

One of the most common side effects of taking Molly is nausea, which can be heightened by the atmosphere that someone is in when they take it.

Does Molly Make You Throw Up?

While Molly is likely to cause nausea, it is not explicitly known to cause vomiting. This means that someone who takes MDMA may feel nauseous, but may or may not throw up as a result. To prevent feeling nauseous and throwing up, those who choose to use MDMA should drink a lot of fluids and eat regularly.

Long-Term Effects of MDMA

If MDMA is used frequently, it may pose some additional long-term risks. Someone who uses or had used MDMA may eventually experience:

  • Loss of appetite
  • Worse sleep
  • Impulsive behavior
  • Trouble concentrating
  • Heart disease
  • Depression
  • Changes in memory
  • Blood vessel issues

If you have taken MDMA in the past and experience any of the symptoms above, contact your doctor as soon as possible to determine if medical treatment is necessary.

How Can You Treat MDMA Side Effects?

If you experience side effects after taking MDMA, you will likely be able to undergo treatment at home. This is unless, of course, you experience extreme negative symptoms of the drug. Those who are “coming down,” or losing their high, from Molly should be supervised by someone they trust. They should stay hydrated and rested for as long as they can.
