When someone close to you is struggling with a serious alcohol dependence, it can be hard to know what to do. It’s important to remember that you cannot change someone, no matter how hard you try, but you can provide them with support and guide them to seek professional help. Furthermore, you can join your family member in a family counseling program if this is something that is offered at the recovery facility you choose.

Steps to Recovery is a high-quality, professional drug rehab facility that can help any individual who is struggling with alcohol dependence. And at Steps to Recovery, we put the emphasis on family involvement, so family counseling is definitely a part of our recovery plan.

The Role of a Family Counseling Program in Drug Rehab

All types of therapy matter greatly when it comes to recovering from addiction. Individual therapy allows clients to express themselves in private. They can bring up ideas and thoughts that they may not otherwise be comfortable with expressing in the presence of others.

But group counseling is important as well, and a family counseling program is especially vital. That’s because when someone is struggling with alcoholism, the problem is not limited to that individual. Alcoholism affects every single member of the immediate family, and it can even effect extended family members as well.

When counseling with family members takes place, it allows everyone to air their emotions and worries and to express their anxiety and their deepest feelings about what’s going on. Airing these things out can help a family heal, and it can help the individual who is struggling with addiction to heal. It also provides a safe place to vent as well as a mediator to interpret.

Choosing a Recovery Path

As you enter into addiction treatment, it’s important to understand the treatment varieties you’ll have at your disposal. Choosing a form of treatment is largely up to you, but there are some key points that may help guide you as you make your decision.

First, keep in mind that traditional inpatient rehabilitation is not something that everyone can participate in. Often in severe cases of addiction, inpatient or partial hospitalization is necessary for full recovery. However, most individuals cannot halt their lives and go full-time into inpatient treatment.

That’s why we offer an intensive outpatient treatment program (IOP) alternative at Steps to Recovery. This flexible program allows individuals to continue with their family life and career or schooling and still live at home. Addiction treatment continues on an outpatient basis.

There are two phases to our program. The first phase includes enrichment courses on daily goals as well as an individual and family counseling program. 12-step program information is also offered during phase 1. The second phase includes extra courses on longer-term sobriety goals and life skills. More family and individual therapy occur during phase 2 as well.
