Ecstasy Addiction

Ecstasy/MDMA Addiction

Ecstasy, also known as Molly, MDMA and X, is an empathogenic substance of the phenethylamine and amphetamine classes of drugs. The drug is usually in a pill or capsule form, which is often mixed with another substance, although it is sometimes found in powder form. It’s is a schedule 1 controlled substance and very popular in the club and bar scene, classifying it in slang terms as a “club drug.”

In 2010, a drug report issued by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) stated that in the prior year, 2.4 percent of eighth graders, 4.7 percent of tenth graders and 4.5 percent of twelfth graders abused the drug at least once during the year. This study shows just how prominent ecstasy is in the younger generation.

Is Ecstasy/MDMA Addictive?

Ecstasy is highly addictive, and a survey by NIDA indicated that 43 percent of people who used ecstasy met the diagnostic criteria for dependency.

Ecstasy is a very dangerous club drug because of the overwhelming sense of well-being it provides the person using it. This can cause a person to lower their inhibitions and decide to do things they normally would not do. This can be very dangerous for multiple reasons. Primarily, people under the influence of ecstasy are more likely to engage in risky, life threatening behaviors. They may also be more vulnerable to predators that find it easy to take advantage of someone they know is using because of the lacking inhibitions. A person may experience cravings for ecstasy after using it just one time. According to the NIDA, dependency is likely in nearly half of all users.
