Discrimination in the LGBTQIA+ Community
The LGBTQIA+ community frequently faces social stigmas, discrimination, violence, and harassment, which increase the risk of mental health disorders and addictions. Our philosophy at Steps to Recovery is that a welcoming and inclusive environment is crucial to the recovery and healing process for all.
7.6 Million Adults
There were 7.6 million LGBTQIA+ adults affected by substance use disorders or mental health disorders in 2019, and only 7.4% of treatment programs offered specialized services to them.
Internal and External Trauma Factors
Gender and sexual orientation among other factors have been shown to significantly increase trauma experienced by LGBTQIA+ individuals.

It is possible that these challenges may increase the risk of behavioral health issues such as addiction and mental illness. Each member of our staff at our LGBTQIA+ treatment center undergoes continuous education to help them recover from their disorders. Each year, Steps to Recovery staff participates in a minimum of 30 hours of training. These trainings include:
- Gender-affirming care training
- Inclusion trainings
- LGBTQIA+ cultural and competent care training
- LGBTQIA+ healthcare training and education
Steps to Recovery provides drug and alcohol treatment to LGBTQIA+ individuals as well as LGBTQIA+ affirming housing, clinical groups, and trained and supportive staff for advocacy and resources in the community. Our LGBTQIA+ rehab centers provide detox and residential treatment, a family program, and an alumni program. We also offer a detox program for those who are not ready for residential treatment.
Those who have completed our LGBTQIA+ mental health and addiction treatment have access to our Alumni Program. Additionally, we continue to support the LGBTQIA+ community through hosting events like PRIDE and other community gatherings.
